In my previous blog, I mentioned that I wanted to create a work environment that I like most. When I hired my first staff in 2015 and I offered a flexible schedule, I noticed people were confused. People wanted structure, they needed to know what the work hours and days were. It was hard for me to relate since it had been one year since I had been self-employed and enjoyed the flexibility to its finest; I had to readjust back to a structured work/life balance.
The world is ready for a flexible work experience
In 2022, the world has transformed and changed. Flexibility in the workplace is now feasible thanks to technology that has been around for a long time. However, until recently, the workforce was unaware that it was conceivable to this degree. Our industry (and so many others) are still cautious since they were unaware that it was conceivable and successful. It’s unfamiliar, unpleasant, and unusual, but it works. It is working at Day2Day Books.
Day2Day Books, therefore, serves as the model for a fresh approach to running a business in the services sector. At Day2Day Books, self-management (autonomous management) has emerged as a dynamic new management choice.
Improving employee mental health through connection
Another lesson the last couple of years has taught us is the importance of connection. Besides your family, your coworkers are part of a circle you spend a lot of time with. The feeling of connection makes us all a little better. Know the saying 1 + 1 = 3? When you feel connected, you are more inclined to go the extra mile. When you feel connected, you help your teammates.
Plus it’s proven to improve employee physical health! Based on a study by Acap in Australia – it’s true!
How we make staying connected & flexibility work
We allow our team to work from home, yet we pride ourselves on staying connected. Isn’t that contradictory?
Although we didn’t get everything perfect overnight, we now have a system in place that includes weekly team meetings with cameras on, regular 1-on-1 meetings (in person or online), and team outings where everyone can participate in activities. Having flexible work schedules allow us to have a great work/life balance!
